5 Month Check In

Why hello there!

It might be surprising after reading my history on this blog, but I’m still at it! It’s been about five months I’ve been on this journey now and boy has it had its ups and downs (quite literally). I’ve learned a lot though and even though I have a long way to go I’ve never been so motivated. I don’t think I’ll lose the weight, I don’t hope I’ll lose the weight: I KNOW I’ll lose the weight. This is one of the best gifts I’ve ever given myself, I’m not staring at the scale on a daily basis frustrated with my progress or set-backs. That’s because I know that if I continue with the lifestyle I’ve started and slowly improve that the weight will come off.

Instead of dropping a huge blog update here, I’ve decided that I’m going to attempt to write to the blog at least 3 times a week, though I’d like to do it daily. This is for three reasons: accountability, sharing, and practice. The accountability portion is important, because even if nobody reads this I have to write it, which will reinforce things I already know and help me hold myself accountable. Sharing is important to me when it comes to weight loss and changing your life because I’ve found when people collaborate and form a community it’s the most helpful. That and I truly just do enjoy talking about this stuff. Third, I love writing and they say the more you write the better you get, so I’m hoping to use this blog to hone my skills a bit.

As a quick update, I’ll let you know where I’m at. My firstweigh in was after about 2 and a half weeks after I started and I blogged it here; I’d lost an astounding 18 pounds in that time. Now I know from experience that those first numbers are usually the easiest to come off and a lot of it had to do with water weight because I had stopped soda completely and only drank water. My weight loss hit a brick wall after that and I’d be lying if I said it wasn’t incredibly frustrating after that initial huge loss. A pound here, two pounds here, and a gain or two was a frustrating thing to see on the scale. The more frustrated I got the more lax I became, until for a whole month I just kind of fell off the new habits I had created.

This was easy to do for a few reasons, the biggest being that my whole family got the flu and it just wiped out all progress. There was no gym for weeks, my wife wasn’t preparing the new healthy meals we came up with, and we just were plain wiped. It was so easy to slide back into those habits.

The good news is though that even though I initially gained back around 9 pounds, I lost it just as quickly as soon as I’ve gotten serious and I’ve slowly crept back down, and better yet, maintained my weight loss even on weeks where I haven’t been serious and lost weight.

I’m now fully back on track, down 28 lbs, and am very happy with my progress. I’ve found some podcasts that really help motivate me, new life changes that have worked for me, and overall even with my setbacks I’ve lost a great amount of weight since January.

I’m not going to stop here and I have so much longer to go. I intend on frequently posting as stated above so feel free to follow me or leave a comment.

Until next time!
